Ingredients

For the batter
  • 1 head cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup flour All-purpose or gluten-free alternative
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1 cup water Adjust as necessary for batter consistency
  • Oil for frying Use enough to submerge the cauliflower
For the sauce
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup Use maple syrup for a vegan option
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • Green onions for garnish Chopped

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix the cornstarch, flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and ginger powder.
  2. Gradually add water until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Dip each cauliflower floret in the batter, allowing the excess to drip off.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and fry the battered cauliflower until golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes.
  2. In another pan, combine sesame oil, soy sauce, honey (or sticky maple syrup), and rice vinegar. Heat over medium until it simmers.
  3. Add the fried cauliflower to the sauce and toss to coat completely.
  4. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and garnish with chopped green onions before serving.

Notes

For added crispiness, use more cornstarch in the batter. Fry in batches to avoid steaming. For a spicy kick, add red pepper flakes to the sauce.
